toto

1º_ Hypocoristic of Antonio . 2º_ 'Toto' is the name of about twenty cities: four in the Democratic Republic of Congo, three in Angola and the USA, two in South Korea and Indonesia, and one in India, Mexico, Nigeria, New Guinea, Spain and China. 3º_ 'Toto' is a pop rock band created by American session players in 1976. The origin of the name has different versions. The oldest (and the one I like the most) tells that its drummer Jeff Porcaro saw on television the film The Wizard of Oz ("The Wizard of Oz", Victor Fleming, 1939) and was tempted to laugh with the name of Dorothy's dog, to the point of taking it as a crutch and repeating "Toto, Toto!" at every moment. When it was necessary to identify in the recording studio the demos of the band, which still had no name, he put some labels with the word "TOTO" (or maybe it was the engineer of the studio, as a nod to the musician) and as all the tapes already had that name they decided almost unanimously that it would be that of the band. Only in the 1980s bassist David Hungate explained that toto in Latin means "at all", and that it represents the totality of styles played by the members of the group.
