Autophagy is a catabolic process highly conserved in eukaryotes, in which the cytoplasm, including excess organelles or those damaged or aberrant, are abducted in double membrane vesicles and released within the lysosome/vacuole for breakdown and eventual recycling of the resulting macromolecules.
