It is a term of Greek origin that means burning, scotching, burning. It is the name of an infectious disease of livestock and some other domestic and wild animals, also known as anthrax. It is zoonotic, meaning it can be transamitized to humans. It is produced by Bacillus anthracis. It manifests itself in the form of scabs or tumors on the skin. The route of infection can be airborne or by ingestion. There is a risk that the bacillus will be used as a biological weapon.
