Temperature scale in degrees Fahrenheit that starts from absolute zero and for this reason has no negative values. It is used in some countries for work in thermodynamics and its symbol is R. The name is a tribute to who proposed it in the mid-nineteenth century, the Scottish physicist William John Macquorn Rankine, although his name is best known for his contributions to the use and understanding of thermal energy.
