VENUSTIANO name of a former president of Mexico, noted for having twice rejected invasions of the United States to Mexican territory, the first achieved the withdrawal of the American navy from Veracruz in 1914 and the second prevented entry as a response to the entry of Pancho Villa to New Mexico. Venustiano Carranza was assassinated while he was the first constitutionally elected president, near the end of his term, on May 21, 1920 in Tlaxcalantongo, Puebla.
