In botany it is the name of a genus of palm trees in the family Arecaceae. Its name is due to the fact that it was dedicated to the German mathematician Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss. These palm trees are found in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. There is also an asteroid with the same name and it was also named for the same reason. Dedicated to Gauss, in Honor of Gauss.
