ACTINOBACTERIA from the Greek 'actino', sunbeam; Bacteria that are mostly found in soil, and include some of the most typical terrestrial life forms. They are fundamental in the decomposition of organic matter, such as cellulose. They produce about 45% of all metabolites with biological activity (bioactive metabolites), with the genus Streptomyces producing 80% of those compounds.
