Pamplona city founded by the Roman general Pompey around the year 74 BC. C . about another pre-Roman population called perhaps Bengoda. The name Pompaelo, perhaps derived from the nickname given to him by Strabo, Pompeios polis, later had many phonetic and graphic variants such as Pampeiopolis, Pampelona, Pampeluna, Pampilo, Pompelo, Pompilone. . . . .
