STUART European dynasty Reigning family in Scotland (1371-1714) and throughout Great Britain (1603-1714). It was originally a noble family from Scotland, vying for power with the rival clans of the Bruce and Baliol. They achieved royalty with Robert II (1316–90), who received the throne on the death of his mother's brother, David II Bruce, in 1371 On William's death in 1702, the last queen of the Stuart dynasty, Anne Stuart (1665–1714), second daughter of James II, occupied the English throne. Under his reign, the personal union that the Stuarts had made of the English and Scottish Crowns was made constitutional by the Act of Union (1707), which officially gave birth to the United Kingdom of Great Britain.
