In Organic Chemistry it is the name of a phenol derived from benzine. It is also called guayol or pyroguayácic acid. It has medicinal uses. It is used in tests to detect hidden blood in fecal matter. It can be obtained naturally from the guava tree (scientific name Guaiacum officinale), which belongs to the family Zygophyllaceae.
