They are also known as kawashkar or kawésqar. It is the name of a Chilean nomadic ethnic group. They were also called alacalufes, alakaluf or halakwulup. For about 6000 years they were navigators of the southern canals of Patagonia. It was also the name of the language they spoke. The word means being human, person.
