It can also be found as 'sans culotte' or 'sans-culotte'. It was every armed member of the French lower classes who fought at the beginning of the revolution of 1789. Its name means "without panties", as the culotte was worn by the upper classes and they differed by wearing longer trousers than the so-called underwear.
