It is a place of purification for the Shinto. It is a washing of the hands, mouth, and bucket used for the rite. It is located before arriving at the Jinja, or sacred space. It is also called Temizuya and ritual is called Temizu. The bowl or container where the water is called chozubachi. A high percentage of believer still makes the rite in natural springs.
