It is the name of a genus of moths, known as the birches moth (Biston betularia) and the oak moth (Biston strataria). They belong to the family Geometridae. They have triangular appearance with wings collected and characterized by larvae geomensoras or quarters inchworms. They are a vivid example of the evolution of species and adaptation to changes in the environment. In these species occurred industrial melanism, phenomenon consisting of obscure its coloration to blend better in the branches and trunks of trees and avoid attacks from their predators.
