The original name of the island was Boriken named after the Taino people who inhabited the island before the arrival of Cristobal Colon. Over time the name derived in Borinquen and those born in Puerto Rico or anywhere in the world and so feel they are also known as Boricuas.

When the Spaniards arrived to Puerto Rico, with them came a large number of Arabs in a clandestine way, just after the defeat of the Arab rule in the Iberian peninsula. Arabs supposedly greatly influenced the language on the island, as well as customs and some traditions. And, in particular, trash comes from a small container of mud or " zafaca " the Arabs had in the kitchen to take the wastes that were given to pigs. Over time the Puerto Rican becomes the word trash.
