Also ureus, representation of an Egyptian cobra with the head raised and extended hood, protective solar symbol of the Pharaohs who wore the Crown. Uraeus is the Latin translation of the Greek ouraion, the name given by the Greek writer Horapolon of the 5th century a. (d). (C). in his Hieroglyphica.
