It is the common name of several plants, which are characterized by being quite aromatic and some of them are used as a condiment. The most common is the scientific name Thymus vulgaris and belongs to the family Lamiaceae (genus Thymus). They contain thymol and various essential oils, which give it a characteristic and pleasant smell. From the same family are the genera Helichrysum, Teucrium and Thymbra. They are also called thyme, zamarrilla or almoradul. Tinderbox, perpetual or immortelle is also called thyme (Helichrysum stoechas). There are other plants in the family Asteraceae, of the genus Artemisa, also called thyme, brown brush, and sea wormwood. There is a species of the family Cistaceae, also called Moorish thyme, edrea or rockrose (Fumana thymifolia).
