(Passage of the ) Thermopylae, from the Greek «thermós»: «pýle» and hot: door, spring, because there springs emanate. Gorge once militarily impassable in northern Greece mount Oeta and the Malíaco Gulf. It communicates to Thessaly with Locris. The denudation exerted by the Esparquio River has expanded considerably.
