In Mexico it is the name of a shrub and its fruits. The word is of Nahuatl origin and means sweet and sour fruit hard as a stone. This shrub has the scientific name Crataegus mexicana, belongs to the Rosaceae family. It is also known as manzanita, manzailla, manzana de Indias, manzana chilena, tejocotera and tejocote. It is usually used to make necklaces and also to make Christmas decorations.
