SOLILOQUY = theatrical monologue that appears to be a series of thoughts unsaid. During the 16th and 17th Centuries was a theatrical Convention accepted, and was skillfully used by William Shakespeare to reveal the thoughts of its characters. Pierre Corneille enhanced his lyricism, while Jean Racine favored it for its dramatic effect; However, the 40 English restoration comedies; 1660 85 ) abused in this way and it eventually fell into disuse. It was rejected by prose writers dramatists such as Henrik Ibsen, and rarely was used on naturalist theatre of s. XIX. Many dramatists of the s. XX re-publishing of the soliloquy as artificial, even though Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller, among others, broke it through the introduction of narrators who alternately reasoning about action and taking part in it. It has been used by contemporary playwrights such as John Guare and Brian Friel, and the illusion that the characters make confidences to the public has been accepted by a culture accustomed to interviews and documentary films.
