Name of a geological period of the Paleozoic Era. It was the third period, after Cambrian and Ordovician and preceded the Devonian, Carboniferous and Permian. It means relative to the Catfish, a Celtic people who existed in the region where the first fossil finds were made (South Wales). It occurred between 444 and 419 million years ago.

Name of a geological period within the Paleozoic era. It was named after Roderick Murchison, who studied the strata of this period in the Welsh region where the Catfish people lived in pre-Roman times.
