In Portuguese it means desert (or large desert, desertonic, serton). In Brazil it is the name of a Geographical Region that occupies the Northeast of the country. It comprises the so-called Planalto and is made up of the territories of the States of Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Pernambuco, Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte, Piauí and Sergipe.
