It is a unit for measuring radiation in ionizable air, which was used in safety calculations in exposure to X-rays (or roentgen) and gamma rays. Today, more efficient scales are used in rad or gray. The name is a tribute to the German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, discoverer of X-rays.
