It means patrol, and is a reduction of the French patrouille which is the guard round made by a soldier patrouiller ("patrolman"), and which has its etymology in patouiller ("to splash with one's feet in the water or in the mud"), which is the contraction of patte ("leg") and gadrouille ("clay, mud, mud)".
