It is a type of vessel used in India, especially on the coasts of Malabar and in Ceylon (Sry Lanka). Its origin is Arabic, from the Dhow or Dau, which is a medium boat of a triangular sail (it has a single mast). In Portuguese it is a word meaning plateau, rest, level.
