partitive (from lat. partire , depart) 1 adj. and n. m. Gram It applies to the numerals that express a certain part of a whole, such as half, third, eighth . Numeral. 2 adj. It applies to what can be split or divided. 3 Gram It applies to the way in which a noun or pronoun is used to refer to a part of the thing or the things designated by them. It consists, either in the suppression of the article, or in the use of the preposition of preceding it; the second form is used when it comes to a specified or known thing: He ate the cake and drank the wine Give me what you have in your pocket Always smoke my cigarettes . In another case, the first one is used: He ate cake, he drank wine, he always smokes cigarettes .
