It is one of the common names that give the carob-tree, a tree of the Fabaceae family in Mexico and whose scientific name is Hymenaea courbaril. It has many other common names: pakai, nere, cuapinol, guapinol (Mexico), Jatobá or jatoba, jatayva in guarani, commercialization (Bolivia), or carob (Puerto Rico, Panama, Venezuela and Colombia).
