In biology it is a type of organelle specialized for inoculating toxins. It is also called a cnidus. It serves for the capture of prey, for locomotion and for the defense of the colony. It is usually possessed by Cnidarians (jellyfish, corals, sea anemones).

Nematocisto: m. (Zool. ) Each stinging vesicles of the coelenterates, consisting of a small intracellular capsule, which contains a stinging filament that distills an irritating liquid. Some species of coelenterates, such as jellyfish and the siphonophore, have Nematocysts which cause a very unpleasant itching.
