mecenas: Sponsor. A person who supports a cause by taking advantage of its economic power or social recognition. Protector, benefactor, tutor, godfather.; Backer: Wealthy Roman citizen (Aretio 69-8 before Christ ). During the reign of Augustus was a great protector of the arts and letters in Rome.
