Lipids: m. ( pl. ) Quim. Group of organic substances that includes fats and other compounds of similar characteristics. They are not soluble in water but in chloroform, benzene and other organic solvents. Lipids are divided into fats and waxes. The first are esters of glycerol and fatty acids above. Waxes are esters of higher fatty acids and higher alcohols. Apart from these, there are some complex bodies: compound lipids, which are called lipoid.
