It's a medical term. Quernícterus can also be used. It is the name of a very serious neurological complication in neonates, due to the excessive increase of bilirubin in the blood. It is also called nuclear jaundice, ichthyeric encephalopathy, bilirubin encephalopathy or neonatal bilirubin encephalopathy.

kernicterus : A form of jaundice that arises in the newborn, of special severity due to the tendency to produce irreversible neurological changes by impregnation of bilirubin in areas of the brain.
