IMMUNOSUPPRESSION A patient's inability to produce an adequate immune response to viruses and bacteria, or as a result of treatments that weaken defense systems. A person may be immunodeficient due to illness or infection. For example, people infected with HIV are immunocompromised people, as are those who have undergone treatments with aggressive drugs such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
