Hydra . ( Of the lat. )( hydra, and this of the Gr. ?, aquatic snake). 1. f. aquatic, venomous snake, which is often found near coasts, both the Indian and Pacific sea. It is black above and yellowish white below, of about five decimetres of long, covered with small scales and tail for swimming and very compressed on both sides. 2. f. polyp of cylindrical shape and one to two centimeters in length, resembling a tube closed by limb and with several tentacles in the other. It breeds in fresh water and feeds on infusorial and gusanillos.
