It is a type of substance that increases plants their sensitivity to light or phototropism. It can also be a property of some plants that can cause skin redness problems or that also makes them useful for treating problems of hyperpigmentation, vitiligo and leukodermia.

From Greek phyton, plant, phos photos, light and Latin sensus, sense, sensation, reaction to sensory stimuli. It is said of the substances of plants that applied to the skin trigger adverse effects such as redness or burns in the presence of solar radiation.
