It is the name of an alkaloid found in many plants of the Fabaceae family. Its presence is frequent in the genera Lupinus, Cytisus, Baptisia, Genista, Sophora and Ammodendron. It is also found in plants of the genus Pelargonium, of the family Geraniaceae. It has medicinal and cosmetic uses.
