El Chaltén is a town and municipality in Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. The name is of Tehuelche origin where chaltén means "smoky mountain", and refers to the mountain currently known as Fitz Roy, which is not a volcano, but the clouds swirling at its top give that impression.
