Cf. RAE. 2 . Toponymy. The names Amazonia or Amazonia come from the legendary and ancient people of the "Amazons" of Greek mythology. It is named after the Spanish explorer and conquistador "Francisco de Orellana" who believed that tribes of warrior women inhabited the region and named both the river and the area surrounding it in reference to that mythical town.
