COUNTERSOCIEDAD Pierre Lastres, in Society against the State argues that what Western culture calls primitive societies were and are actually (in the Amazon and other little explored places) societies that have managed without the concentration of prestige transformed into concentration of power and the corresponding social oppression that this entails. Instead, those of us who call ourselves members of an advanced society constitute a counter-society incapable of managing itself freely, with leaders but no rulers.
