Col . ( Of the lat. )( caulis ). 1. f. plant hortense, the family of the Cruciferae, with very broad radical leaves usually and thick pencas, flowers in panicle at the end of a common, small, white or yellow, and very fine seed. Many varieties, all are grown foodstuffs, which are distinguished by the colour and the shape of its leaves. The commonest is the white pencas. Col of Brussels. 1. f. variety, instead of developing a single bud, with stalks around which grow tight many small buds. Col red cabbage. 1. d. Lombard (? kind of purple cabbage).
