It is a way of calling toxic trees or shrubs; It is also the name of the toxic resin that is extracted from them. They are of the genus Toxicodendron (meaning toxic trees) and belong to the family Anacardiaceae. One of the toxic substances they possess is called Urushiol, which causes severe irritations to the skin and mucous membranes.
