basterna . ( Of the lat. )( Basterna ). 1. Sarmatian individual of an ancient people m. which, to the North of the Carpathian Mountains and near the sources of the Vistula, occupied territory where today are Podolia and Ukraine on the Dniester and Dnieper rivers. U m in pl. 2. f. peculiar chariot of the ancient basternas. 3. f. covered litter, commonly carried by two mules or donkeys, which in ancient times used the Roman ladies.
