It was one of the nicknames given to an ethnic group originating in the central plains of North America. They lived in the Missouri and Saskatchewan River basins. They were known as Gross ventres or of the Great Belly. They had separated from the Arapahos. They belonged to the Algonquina family. The term is derogatory.
