( Of the lat. )( alumen, - inis ). 1. m. double sulfate of potash and alumina: astringent and white salt found in some rocks and land, from which is extracted by dissolution and crystallization. It is used to clarify the murky waters; serves as a mordant in dyeing and caustic in medicine after calcined. alum of pen. 1. m. The ferrous which crystallizes in the form of feather-like filaments.
