It is the name of several plants of the genus Capsicum and especially of its pungent fruits. It comes from the Taíno haxi.
It's the same as chili, pepper, pique, or locote. They are also called chiltepín, chiltepe. They are usually plants of the genus Capsicum of the Solanaceae family and are characterized by having spicy fruits, although a few are not.
Remnants of seeds of chili in territories between Peru and Bolivia with 7000 years old have been found. In the Inca Empire his quechua name was utzu and the Arawak axí comes its present name.
