It is one of the common names of a tree in the family Anacardiaceae, native to the Amazon basin. Receives also the common names of cashew, cashew, cashew, Marañón chestnut, caguil or merey. Its scientific name is Anacardium occidentale. A corrosive oil can be obtained from its seeds and their nuts are edible and nutritious. It has medicinal uses, and its wood is reddish. It only exists in Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia and Peru.
