Be encased in stone and mud is used to indicate that someone is voluntarily in a place that does not want to leave, either by anger, fear, or occupation. Example: The disciples of Jesus were with the doors closed for fear of the Jews. I.e. were locked to stone and mud for fear of the Jews.
