XYLITOL Sweetener discovered in 1891, which looks like sugar, but has 40% fewer calories, prevents cavities and regulates blood glucose, among other health benefits. It is called birch sugar because the first time it was obtained from its bark. It was popular during World War II in Finland because of the difficulty of importing natural sugar. It ceased to be popular but currently its use has been increased to help father children with greater defenses against caries and, along with stevia, it is also ideal against diabetes, since it is a hypoglycemic agent that regulates the production of pancreatic insulin.
