It is the name of a Mexican town in the State of Guanajuato. It is a free municipality, run by a City Council. In pre-Hispanic times it was called Maxichu which means "brotherhood of grandmother" in Chichimeca. In its entirety is within the reserve of the biosphere called "Sierra Gorda in Guanajuato".
