Name given to a thin strip of the Mediterranean Levant, which ran from Mount Carmel to the ancient city of Ugarit. Canaan, land of the Canaanites. The conditions of the mountainous soil and unsuitable for agriculture made its inhabitants expert navigators and traders. Name of a civilization that settled in that region. They were good merchants and navigators, as well as being among the first to use an alphabet. It currently covers territories of Israel, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine.
