Meaning of teoría de las signaturas by Felipe Lorenzo del Río

Felipe Lorenzo del Río

teoría de las signaturas
  23

Also called theory of the sign of ancient and popular medicine, it expresses (ba) the conviction that everything (minerals, plants or animals) carries on itself the signs of its virtues. Even medieval Christian theology defended that the creator has placed in every being the keys to his usefulness to man. In the botanical pharmacopoeia of the renaissance many healing plants are mentioned based on this theory, such as hepatic, hepatica nobilis, for liver disease because of its trilobed leaves.
